Little Dragon Tour stops in Toronto Jan 17th, 2011

Little Dragon is an electronic music band, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. It consists of Swedish-Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano (vocals, percussion) and her close high-school friends Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrick Källgren (bass), and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). The first Little Dragon's release was a double A-side 7" single "Twice"/"Test", released on Off The Wall label in 2006. The following year, the band signed with the larger British indie Peacefrog Records and released their debut self-titled album Little Dragon on September 3, 2007.

Since then they have been touring through Europe and also have made music videos for the songs "Test", "Twice", "Constant Surprises", "After the Rain" and "Fortune". The double A-side single "Fortune"/"Blinking Pigs" was released in the UK on January 26, 2009. Their song "Twice" is featured in Season 5 of ABC'sGrey's Anatomy. In late 2009, the group was chosen as one of Beyond Race Magazine's "50 Emerging Artists", resulting in a spot in the publication's

#11 issue as well as an exclusive online Q&A on the magazine's site.

The band's name came from a nickname Yukimi earned in the recordings studios. She would often become frustrated during recording which earned her the nickname "Little Dragon". And when the band decided on a name to go by, the nickname stuck.

Josephine Baker was First to set the Path

Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American-born dancer, singer, and actress. Nicknamed the "Bronze Venus," the "Black Pearl", and even the "Créole Goddess" in anglophone nations, in France, Josephine has always been known simply as "La Baker."

Baker was the first African American to star in a major motion picture, to integrate an American concert hall, and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in the United States (she was offered the unofficial leadership of the movement by Coretta Scott King in 1968 following Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination, but turned it down),[3] for assisting the French Resistance during World War II[4] and for being the first American-born woman to receive the French military honor, the Croix de guerre.

Big Win for Milwaukee Bucks

Last night was a really, really important win for the Milwaukee Bucks for a whole mess of reasons. It brought yet another losing streak to an end, it got Milwaukee's offense on track (for a night), and it lent a load of confidence to a frustrated team that has been beset by bad luck. 24 hours after getting embarrassed by bottom-feeder Detroit, the Bucks played with intensity, they played with grit, and they won a game against a team that gave them everything they could handle. Except more than 5 minutes from their starting 2 guard. But still...!

Who knows if this is a jumping-off point or just a short peek above the clouds before the looming storm that is the Bucks' December-into-January schedule. For now, here's the weekly look-in on Milwaukee's performance.

Taylor got a Man?

You've heard the rumors. You've read the quotes from anonymous sources. But you still haven't seen Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal together.

Until now!

Following a Thanksgiving morning spent at a Brooklyn coffee shop, this likely couple visited Swift's hometown of Nashville over the weekend. Yesterday afternoon, the two were seen getting breafast at Fido, a coffeehouse and café near Vanderbilt University. Allow us to present actual evidence this time.

"They were smiling and laughing. They were talking a lot and enjoying each other's company," a witness told People. "They didn't look like friends."

Another customer named Emma Rice, who posted this picture online, added that Taylor and Jake looked "very cute" and "seemed close."

Tiger Woods One Year Later: Timeline of an Epic Fail

Tiger Woods, Nike AdNike

Where were you when you found out that Tiger Woods was involved in a suspicious single-car crash outside his own home in the haven't-been-to-bed-yet, wee morning hours after Thanksgiving?

We know now that it was all downhill from there, but never has a lurching slope been so bumpy in the digital age. Take a moment to review how Tiger got from A to B-minus, and let us all give thanks for our relatively undramatic private lives.

Kayne West still at it with Taylor Swift

Kanye West is still angry at Taylor Swift. At a surprise performance of his acclaimed new album at NYC's Bowery Ballroom around 1 a.m. Wednesday, West, 33, launched another attack against the country star, 20, whom he famously ambushed at the 2009 Video Music Awards.

During his rant, West seemed to suggest that the Speak Nowsinger used the VMA brouhaha to bolster her fame.

"Taylor never came to my defense at any interview," West ranted. "And rode the waves and rode it and rode it," he sniped of Swift.

Swift wasn't West's only target. The "Power" rapper also dug into Matt Lauer, with whom he recently tussled on the Today Show.

West charged that Lauer "exploited" him as they chatted about former President George W. Bush, who lamented that West called him a "racist" for his handling of Katrina.

Bush had said that West's comment was a "lowest moment" in his Presidency; West also objected to theToday Show playing a video clip of the VMA moment during their Today Show interview.

"Because [of] the popularity of me, they exploited that...That's not what he f*cking said!" West railed. "That's not what he said! He said it was one of his lowest moments. But it shows you---the way they try to villainize, the way they tried to do that."

FOR COLORED GIRLS - MOVIE REVIEW

The Plot:

For Colored Girls centers on 9 women who each encounter some form of abuse, neglect, or harassment whether it’s physical, sexual, or emotional. The characters begin the film as acquaintances but as the story progresses they become unexpected allies during some of the most terrifying moments of their lives.

The Good:

  • Thandie Newton: Perry brought together a variety of talented actresses to star in this ensemble but one of them stole the show — Thandie Newton. The British star steps completely out of her comfort zone as Tangie, an over-sexed bar tender who uses men, ignores her mother, and hates her sister, all because she hates herself. The actress has played drug addicts, seductresses, and overall bad women in the past but none like this. Tangie is a different kind of monster.
  • The Relationships: The theme that binds all these characters together is pain. They’re all damaged in some way and are forced to reach out and help each other when they’ve reached rock bottom. Those moments are the most beautiful to watch because there’s no judgment, just community.
  • The Down Low Life Style: This is one of the first major films that I’ve seen tackle the “down low.” Over the past few years, television specials and documentaries have covered this phenomenon of African American men who’re in heterosexual marriages but are engaging in sexual relationships with other men. I won’t reveal what character encounters this dilemma but just know it has some serious consequences.

The Bad:

  • The Men: All the men in this movie are dogs. Liars, rapists, philanderers, are just some of the words that can be used to describe them. Only one of them seems to be a decent guy and that’s Hill Harper’s character, who plays a cop and the husband to Kerry Washington in the film. It’s understood that this is a movie directed towards women who’ve experienced trauma, but do they all have to be at the hands of a psychotic male? There are some good men out there. They do exist.
  • Monologues/Choreopoems: The story was adapted from a play that consists of monologues and chorepoems, which combines music, dance, and dialogue. Perry had to weave together legitimate conversations mixed in with these sections of the play. Unfortunately, some of them don’t fit and are hard to follow. To say it’s difficult to keep up would be an understatement.

Overall:

For Colored Girls has some strong acting. That’s it’s greatest accomplishment. The story is a bit lopsided and unfair to men, but despite that even the male actors brought their A-game. Some serious issues are addressed and discussed so beware, and make sure you bring your tissues.

Rating: 7.5/10
